DR SINGH’S SERVICES

Dr Singh consults with outpatients (new and follow-up patients) at her suite in Life Fourways Hospital. Patients requiring inpatient care are admitted to Life Riverfield Lodge.

Dr Singh incorporates a multidisciplinary team approach that includes psychologists, occupational therapists, a social worker, physiotherapist, dietician and the nursing staff.

Although Dr Singh treats and manages all psychiatric conditions in both genders, she has a particular interest in the following conditions:

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Due to societal pressures and expectations, men often neglect their mental health. Besides general psychiatric conditions such as mood disorders and substance disorders, men also experience masculinity issues, identity crisis, sexual dysfunction and porn addiction.

MOOD DISORDERS

Clinical, major or post-partum depression, bipolar and substance-induced mood disorders and dysthymia can be triggered by chemical imbalances of the brain, which give rise to a multitude of emotions such as sadness, hopelessness and helplessness.

ANXIETY DISORDERS

Social phobia, general anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) are five major anxiety disorders characterised by fear and anxiety that disrupts a person’s daily activities, affecting their livelihood.

PSYCHOSIS

Delusions and hallucinations characterise psychosis, which leads to a distortion of an individual’s reality. A person with schizophrenia is usually unaware of their behaviour and tends to act irrationally based on their distorted belief system.

SUBSTANCE-INDUCED MENTAL DISORDERS

Substance-induced disorders are divided into addiction or withdrawal of specific drugs which thus cause mental illness.

CHILD PSYCHIATRY

Children with neurodevelopment disorders display a range of behavioural and emotional problems that can affect them as they age.

ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), characterised by a short attention span and impulsivity follows a child into adulthood.

CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL PSYCHIATRY

Assimilating spiritual and religious perspectives when clinically assessing the patient helps Dr Singh understand the effects of cultural beliefs, values and social viewpoints on illnesses.

GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY (CARE OF THE ELDERLY)

Geriatric psychiatry, an emerging speciality, focuses on the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of emotional and mental disorders in the elderly with an added forte in dementia.

CONSULT LIAISON PSYCHIATRY

Consult Liaison psychiatry is a sub-speciality of psychiatry that provides collaborative care for patients with prevalent comorbid general medical conditions such as autoimmune conditions, cancer, HIV, burn out etc.

"At the root of this dilemma is the way we view mental health in this country. Whether an illness affects your heart, your leg or your brain, it's still an illness, and there should be no distinction."
